Welsh Bicknor. 15th - 17th February 2008 - Report by Jane
Once again, Ian arranged glorious weather for his winter weekend. Hoping for a repeat of last year's snow, 5 brave souls met in Welsh Bicknor in the Wye Valley. Steve, Rosemary and Jane stopped in the Cotswolds for a walk from Northleach, finishing with a visit to Keith Harding's Museum of Mechanical Music, which we found so fascinating we were late for dinner. It is well worth a visit if you are in the area. Click here for details. Meanwhile Ian and Michael were sampling the delights of Bristol.
On Saturday, we headed over the Wye and across through English Bicknor to Symonds Yat rock, where the peregrine falcon was nesting. After lunch in the Saracen's Head we took the hand pulled ferry over the river and followed the rivernbank back to the hostel. In the evening, we took a moonlit walk to the village to find somewhere to eat.
Sunday was also fine and frosty. We walked from Goodrich Castle and headed (again) across the Wye to a large hill fort above Chase Wood. Our luck ran out when 2 of our planned lunch stops had closed, so after a late pint & a bag of crisps, we headed home.
Thanks to Ian for another fine winter trip.
