Devils Punch Bowl, Surrey. Sunday 12th August 2007 - Report by Margaret
We started our walk from the National Trust Car park at the Devil's Punch Bowl Surrey's most celebrated natural feature. Our planned walk went close to the outbreak of foot and mouth disease so we were unsure if the footpaths were going to be open. 8 members turned out and I lead the walk with my very basic map reading skills and with backup from Neil. The walk begun with a steep descent into the punch bowl. We walked to Thursley and were pleasantly surprised to find the Three Horseshoes pub open. On a previous walk to Thursley the pub appeared to have closed down. We had lunch at the pub and the food was excellent although pricey. Walking after lunch we encountered several footpaths with signs put up by the farmers saying the paths were closed because of the foot and mouth outbreak. We had to divert from our intended route along roads to get around the closed footpaths. Towards the end of the walk we did a strenuous ascent up to the top of Gibbet Hill and enjoyed the superb panoramic views from the top. The walk ended with a welcome tea and biscuit in the cafe back at the car park.
